Words the Heart Can’t Say

Words can’t say what the heart feels,
when the dreaded notice comes.
That a loved one died on the
battlefield ‘mid smoke, fire, and guns.

Emptiness, deep grief, smites
a wordless troubled heart.
There is nothing more to say
a bullet has shattered it apart.

A hug, or two, a gentle pat on
the back, one hand in another.
Is that all to be done, for this
deeply loved, now fallen brother.

Suffer the heart to speak that
which can make the carnage cease.
Listen to the words of the heart,
and find the path to peace.
